Africa Local Government Action Forum
The Africa Local Government Action Forum is an interactive initiative, which was launched in August 2000 following the Africities Summit held in Windhoek, Namibia in May 2000. ALGAF is meant to provide an accessible and low cost platform for structured dialogue on key issues that impact on the performance of local governments. It is a joint initiative of the Municipal Development Partnership for Eastern and Southern Africa (MDP-ESA), the World Bank Institute, the Global Distance Learning Network (GDLN) in seven countries namely, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe and the Global Distance Learning Centre in Washington.

Africa Good Governance Program on the Radio Waves
As a way of contributing to the improvement of knowledge and know-how of local governments to deliver better quality services, MDP-ESA, has, over the years, organised and delivered training and capacity building programmes for both elected and appointed local government officials, as well as other stakeholders from central government, civic society, training and research institutions. These training programmes have been delivered using a mix of both face to face and distance learning methods which have included videoconferencing. While this mix of methods of training in delivery has proved effective, a major challenge still remains to reach more of the targeted municipal officers in outlying municipalities. Municipalities located far away from capital cities and urban areas still continue to be deprived of the much-needed training. It is against this background that MDP-ESA has launched the Africa Good Governance Programme on the Radio Waves.

Commonwealth Local Government Good Practice Scheme
The Commonwealth Local Government Good Practice Scheme is a development programme, funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID) and managed by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum.
The scheme enables local authorities in developing countries to exchange expertise, skills and knowledge to come up with innovative and sustainable solutions to a particular problem, challenge or issue being faced by the developing local authority.
Since the inception of the Scheme in 1998, it has funded technical exchange projects in over 30 commonwealth countries, on a number of local government issues, ranging from waste management to community safety.

Pelican Initiative
The Pelican Initiative is an online network on evidence-based learning and communication for development. It is a joint initiative set up by ECDPM, Healthlink Worldwide’s Exchange programme, the International Development Research Centre, Bellanet and the East Africa Regional Office of UNICEF. The Pelican Initiative was launched in March 2005. It currently has over 370 members from all parts of the world and can be visited here

Capacity.org
Capacity.org is a web magazine-cum-portal intended for practitioners and policy makers who work in or on capacity development in international cooperation in the South. Each issue of Capacity.org focuses on a specific theme relevant to capacity development, with feature articles, reports on policy and practice, interviews and a guest column, and annotated links to related web resources, publications and events.
Professionals involved in the field of capacity development are invited to contribute their views, or to exchange and share information with other professionals in the sector.

ACE-Récit
The ‘Association Construisons Ensemble/laboratoire de Recherche sur les Citoyennetés en transformation’ (Let us build together/laboratory of research on citizenship in transformation) is a local laboratory that delivers knowledge and proposal through research work and experimentation of innovative practices and citizen initiatives at local level in Western Africa. UN-Habitat - Best Practices and Local Leadership Programme
The Best Practices and Local Leadership Programme (BLP) was established in 1997 in response to the call of the Habitat Agenda to make use of information and networking in support of its implementation. It is a global network of government agencies, local authorities and their associations, professional and academic institutions and grassroots organisations dedicated to the identification and exchange of successful solutions for sustainable development. BLP partners are specialised in such areas as housing and urban development, urban governance, environmental planning and management, architecture and urban design, economic development, social inclusion, crime prevention, poverty reduction, women, youth, cultural heritage, municipal finance and management, infrastructure and social services.

UN-Habitat - Best Practices database in improving the living environment
This searchable database contains over 2,650 proven solutions from more than 140 countries to the common social, economic and environmental problems of an urbanizing world. It demonstrates the practical ways in which public, private and civil society sectors are working together to improve governance, eradicate poverty, provide access to shelter, land and basic services, protect the environment and support economic development.
The database is a powerful tool for:
- Analyzing current trends and emerging issues;
- Networking with the people and organisations involved in implementation;
- Capacity-building including new knowledge management tools and methods.

World Bank – Urban and Local Government
The Urban and Local Government program provides city officials with a platform with which to learn and explore in great detail key aspects of urban management. The program consists of core courses targeting city managers, local level policymakers, urban planners and directors of training institutes. The objectives of the program are to advance their knowledge and understanding of a broad range of urban issues and to present the tools they need to plan, manage and govern their cities.
